Dr. Sumesh Thomas is the only physical therapist in the east coast of the United States who is duly certified as an orthopedic physical therapist and a hand therapist, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). The title of “Fellow” is only awarded to physical therapists who demonstrate exceptional skills in using their hands to treat the body. He is board certified in orthopedic physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS), and in hand therapy by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC). The Hand Therapy Certification Commission certifies experienced physical and occupational therapists who have successfully passed a comprehensive national exam in hand therapy.
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Thomas is an article reviewer for the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy (JMMT); an editorial advisory board member for PT in Motion, the official magazine of the American Physical Therapy Association; and an orthopedic physical therapy specialty exam writer for ABPTS.
Dr. Thomas was a member of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy’s (FSBPT) National Physical Therapy Examination Development Committee and served as a dry needling expert on the FSBPT Dry Needling Task Force. He is a former Director of Reimbursement for the Maryland chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). And he served as an expert witness for the State of Maryland on cases related to the practice of physical therapy.
Dr. Thomas earned multiple degrees in physical therapy including a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and a Doctorate degree with honors from the University of Maryland Baltimore. US News & World Report ranks the graduate program in physical therapy at the University of Maryland one of the top programs in the United States.
